What counts as an emergency

• A toothache that stops you from eating or sleeping.
• A broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth.
• An abscess, a swollen gum or cheek.
• A filling or crown that fell out, with or without pain.
• Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction.
• A blow to a child's teeth.

Facial swelling with fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing: that is a hospital emergency or 911, not the dentist. At night and on weekends, Info-Santé at 811 can point you in the right direction.

What to do while you wait

• Toothache: rinse with warm salt water, floss to dislodge anything stuck. An over-the-counter pain reliever, as the label says. Never aspirin directly on the gum.
• Broken tooth: keep the piece in a little milk or saliva. Rinse your mouth. Ice on the cheek.
• Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse without scrubbing. Put it back in its socket if you can, otherwise in milk. Come within the hour: that gives the best chance.
• Abscess: do not try to pop it. Call.
• Lost crown: keep it. Avoid chewing on that side.
